Fundación Épica La Fura dels Baus releases its first virtual residency.
The aim of this call is to offer, for a certain period of time, the communication tool developed by the Foundation, Kalliópê, to those creative and innovative proposals adapted to the “new normal” situation, who want to experiment with the integration of this platform, or those projects that seek new ways and opportunities to access new audiences through innovative technologies.
Kalliópê is a set of digital tools that allow the communication of multimedia content to large audiences, programming interactions with the public through the sending of multimedia messages on their mobile devices in a segmented / personalized way.
The residency will have a maximum duration of 6 months and will culminate with a public, virtual or live exhibition or as a physical-digital combination of the proposal made by the beneficiary of the residency.
In the wake of studying all the proposals, the Foundation has decided to select a total of 5 international projects, which have stood out for their creative value and their trajectory:
MODE 1- Social and/or educative project
-“Tras la Cruz de la Sierra”, Brújula Teatro (Argentina, Colombia and Bolivia), hybrid show where the audience travels through historical and cultural points of interest in the city.
-“En busca de las estrellas”, La Flota Teatro (Mexico), which deals with a show for a young audience, where the fuel theft and its consequences are narrated.
MODE 2 – Creative project
-“Apártate de la oscuridad”, Sophya Acosta LDS + Bauch (Argentina), interactive experience that works with the relation with Argentine stories in the context of hyper-virtuality in which we currently live.
-“La matrix 2.0”, Agrupación Convocatoria Cerrada (Costa Rica), an interactive proposal of “influencers” characters who are linked to a social network.
MODE 3 – Research project
–“Hope(?)”, Open the Kimono (Denmark), a project born with the aim of developing multicultural and multidisciplinary immersive experiences that transform the city of Aarhus.
The initial completion period for the residency was June 30, 2021. Due to the persistence of the pandemic situation and the difficulties that it has entailed in the development of the planned activities, the Foundation has agreed to extend the period of residence until August 30, 2021. In this way, the term to carry out and materialize the tests with users is extended.
The residence hall has made the virtual tool Kalliópê available to the participants and the necessary support for its use and integration into their creative proposals. Throughout the months of residency, both general sessions have been held with all groups involved as well as meetings with each of the teams to find tailor-made solutions for their projects.
The creative teams, in accordance with the rules of the Residence, have presented their projects with users and / or audience.

The creators of the project aimed to “generate an experience that transcends the screens and stains the participant’s daily spaces, generating a kind of” filter “in their eyes that conditions and redefines their personal environments.”
For this, the creative team made a double proposal: on the one hand, the possibility of a multiscreen experience, and on the other, Kalliópê as the only support for the development of the story.
A mixture of folklore and virtual dramaturgy that makes the viewer’s phone an essential element of the plot.

On August 7, the premiere took place in the district of Sydhavn (Aarhus), specifically in an industrial port. The actors and participants took a tour of different areas, with the aim of giving life to little crowded places. The final point was a multipurpose room set up as a theater: “An immersive experience that awakens the invisible world”
A mixture of theater, performance and technology full of fantasy that has used the Kalliópê tool as a guide. Throughout the experience the audience was the center of the narrative, challenged, making decisions and interacting with the characters to defeat a diabolical entity called Umbra.

Kalliópê is a mass communication system designed to send multimedia content to large audiences through its own mobile application. On one hand, it consists of a software (available for Windows and MAC) that allows the creation of channels, the definition of filters and the programming of interactions with the public. This program allows users to send multimedia messages, that is to say text, video, audio and images, as well as generating colors and interactions with the flashlights of the users’ mobile phones. The program must be installed on a computer with an internet connection.
On the other hand, the Kalliópê mobile application allows the user to receive scheduled content. It must be downloaded and installed by the users who will receive the messages. It is necessary that these are connected to the Internet, either through a Wi-Fi or 4G connection.
