Èpica i Singular
A new employment experience for young people

A new employment experience for young people. Èpica i Singular is a new project where a series of young people looking for a job will learn and improve their abilities in a new scenario and in a way that completely differs from the norm.

La Fura dels Baus, along with its foundation Èpica, the Catalan Labour Foundation for the Construction Sector (FLC) and Badalaona’s Municipal Institute of Employment Promotion (IMPO), three completely different entities who share the goal of developing opportunities for young people, agreed to design a common project incorporating each one of their experiences and insights.

This new experience, financed by the Catalan Employment Service within the framework of its Youth Guarantee programmes, offers two lines of work for young people under 30.

The first one, which we may call “of employment”, consists in developing a series of professional abilities and competences by co-creating a theatrical project with the rest of participants, La Fura dels Baus and other professionals. This action tries to provide a more attractive and different way to work with young people and will incorporate the learning of audiovisual techniques and construction specialties related to the world of entertainment (vertical work, structure assembly, etc.). This last aspect will be FLC and IMPO’s main area of action. This line of work will also include guidance on job search and contracting processes.

The second one, aimed to young entrepreneurs, offers a series of resources to facilitate the implementation of business and self-employment projects, be it in the creative industry sector, the construction sector, the media sector or other sectors.

Week 1 - Group Cohesion

These fist days are mostly about building group cohesion. Through deshinibition and space work exercises, the students gain conscience about the group they’re in, the space they move around and how they fit in both. In addition, they learn the story of La Fura dels Baus and its characteristic style and they receive classes on social media (Albert Claret) and production (Nadala Fernández).

Week 2 - Spot

During the second week, Èpica i Singular’s students shoot and present a tv spot related to transhumanism and evolution. They’re asked to be synthetic, specific: they have to put ideas into images in a very short time span. Additionally, it’s necessary for the presentation to be innovative: playing with images, finding inspiration in uncommon places, projecting onto all kinds of surfaces…

They’re divided into very diverse groups in order to facilitate the knowledge exchange that characterizes Èpica and they have from Monday to Friday to outline, film, edit and pitch their work. Finally, the whole class criticizes the projects and decides whether the hypothetical client would have bought the product.

Week 3 - Tools

The third week of the workshop consists in giving the students the theoretical tools they need to start their final project layout. Through illumination, sound, editing and general theatrical language classes, the group builds the competences they need to develop a show.

They are given two subjects: refugees and domestic violence. Through and abstraction of both into ideas such as death, distress or need to escape, the first projects are born. Following La Fura’s style, they will transgress preconvcieved notions of the classical theatrical language.

Week 4 - Starting the first show

After starting the week with rigging classes, Èpica i Singular’s students move towards their final show. With last week’s subjects (refugees and domestic violence) as a starting point, they explore not only what they want to do, but how they want to do it. This translation from ideas to action will be a crucial part of the fourth week.

Week 5 - Refining ideas

The final show is gradually taking shape. The students keep exploring the shift from ideas to matter, a constant exchange any creative action is based on. They will be assisted by Rafa Montilla and his Creativity conference, through which he will convey the knowledge they’ve been acquiring during the last days in a more academical way.

Week 6 - First show

On the last week of this workshop’s final phase, all efforts are put into polishing the final show as much as possible. The subjects that were suggested on week 3, refugees and domestic violence, are still its guiding thread. The situation of a refugee group on a dinghy or a woman suffering abuse after a forced marriage are some of the performance’s main scenes.

Specialization courses - Audiovisuals

Before embarking on their second performance, Èpica i Singular’s students are divided to attend courses of specialization in disciplines that will be useful to complete the workshop.

The Audiovisual course’s intent is to give the fundamental knowledge to ellaborate a short film. Script, film language, cinematography, editing, etc. Students must write an individual script for a short film and pitch it. Two of these scripts are chosen by the teachers to be shot and edited. Since there’s twelve students, all of them will work in each film with a specific position.

The main teachers are Sara Lopez and Marc Vendrell. In addition, other specialists are invited to give classes on specific subjects; for example, Isaac Cañizares gives a film analysis class where “Jaws” is analyzed scene by scene and ,sometimes, shot by shot. Quim Ribalta gives an animation class, focusing on the stop-motion technique.

Specialization courses - Vertical work

Before embarking on their second performance, Èpica i Singular’s students are divided to attend courses of specialization in disciplines that will be useful to complete the workshop.

The vertical work workshop is taught by the Construction Labour Foundation of Badalona. Students acquire technical skills related to construction that can be applied in the world of entertainment and, naturally, will be useful in their final show. Vertical work, assembly of tubular structures and platforms, scaffolding, etc.

In addition, they attend the Forklift Operator and Lift Operator courses, obtaining their corresponding license at the end.

Week 7 - (Re)starting

Èpica i Singular’s seventh week is the beginning of the second joint part of the workshop. The students start working on a new show, basing it off the one they created during the fisrt part and adapting it to a new space, improving and expanding it. They also perform cohesion and concentration exercises in order to unite the group after a few weeks out of the workshop.

Week 8 - Outlining the new show

The students pitch their own individual vision of the show to the rest of the class. Basing it off their last performance and adding some new ideas from last week, they reformulate the show however they think will work best. The best pitches are chosen and combined in order to create a more solid, collectively decided draft.

Week 9 - Assembly

Once the story and the main plot points of the new performance have been decided, Èpica i Singular’s team starts assembling everything that will be necessary to make it happen. They need to reconstruct and adapt the scenography used in their last performance to a new space, in addition to testing the new material and machinery.

Week 10 - Collaborations

Mugaritz, experts in gastronomical creativity and culinary experimentation, and personnel from both the Berklee College of Music and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, specialists in multidisciplinary technological exploration, are the special guests for the tenth week. Through collective work between these two entities with Iglor and the rest of the Èpica i Singular team, new ideas emerge that can be included in the final show. The combination of technology, science and gastronomy with the performative dimension. Meanwhile, the show continues to take shape and the script is definitely consolidated.

One of the notions the students must acquire during this collaboration, in addition to coming into contact with new forms of experimentation and development of concepts, is that ideas don’t always come to fruition as initially planned. Many attempts, rethinking, and course changes are necessary to make something happen, and even then it’s possible to get a bad reception. Pioneers are always a few steps ahead of the rest; such is their luck and thier misfortune. Sometimes, even years after having worked out an idea, the public is not prepared to understand it.

Week 11 - Run-throughs

Week eleven is Èpica i Singular’s final stretch before its definitive show, the first dress rehearsal of which will take place the following Wednesday. Thus, the assembly will end definitively and technical run-throughs, movement tests and the largest possible number of rehearsals will be made. Since it’s a larger show than the first one (both conceptually and physically), a great deal of effort will be spent running the show fluidly in the outer location.

Week 12 - Final show

Six months of intensive work culminate with the collective play about refugees and domestic violence that had been brewing since the first weeks of Èpica i Singular and has been magnified both physically and conceptually over the past few months. While entering the venue, the audience will be guided through a series of exhibitions where they’ll see examples of the work done by the students since the beginning of the workshop. They will be immediately immersed in the journey of a group of refugees; surviving war, abandonig their homes and travelling in a dinghy will be only its beginning. They will arrive in Europe, where the promise of all kinds of opportunities and comforts will prove to be just a hoax that will take them directly to a refugee camp. One of the women will have the opportunity to join European society with a forced marriage that will lead to all kinds of abuse and culminate in the birth of an unwanted child. All this experience will count on the participation of the audience, who will follow the protagonists and interact with them. In short, a show in the purest style of La Fura dels Baus that demonstrates the learning acquired by the students during all these months.
